Own home – Series 1 – When do I live in my own HOME…

When do I live in my own HOME…

Unlike my generation and the generations before, the new gen is rather clear on this. Husband wife earning and as they have the first child, they start thinking. Why should we pay the rent and write it off as expense, when this could as well go into our investment? More so, they would like to see their child growing up in their own abode, an environment they had created to suit their taste and aspirations. They can’t do that in a rented house where they are only a long term lodger. They can’t do that in Palakkad or any of the village town that they belong. So they tend to buy into the best option that is available in the vicinity / proximity of their work. That I believe is the right thing to do.

There are exceptions in my generation also. A good friend who used to be my neighbour in Kochi working for Indian Oil Corporation was the wisest guy I had come across in this respect. With IOC he was on a transferable job. He was in Bangalore and Chennai for longer duration before he came back to Kochi. When he knew the tenure is going to be long, he wisely bought his own house in both Bangalore and Chennai and the rent he would have paid otherwise moved into the housing loan and by the time he came back to Kochi at the fag end of the career he already had two apartments and naturally bought the third one in Kochi. That’s where I used to be his neighbour. Finally when he settled down in Kochi after his retirement he bought a new apartment in a project that is befitting his stature. Such prudence is rare……. I hope my friend is reading this and look forward to his comments

Most of us Malayalis especially in my generation would like to come back to Kerala and settle down in the known village like but secure environment where you still have most of the modern health care and life style amenities.

I feel, such people need to start thinking about it well in advance. Dreaming is always the start of the process for realisation. I did it for almost two years. I had some vague thoughts till then about the kind of HOME I would like to settle. Bit of research and interaction with technically aware friends and I started the journey in the earnest. Like a jig saw puzzle it all started falling in place. My mother and wife were the major motivators and support as I was away in the Middle East.

I would like to invite you to my website www.mohanmenon.in. I have a brief video and a few pics on my HOME, please check it out and comment.

Let me look forward to your views on my thoughts on owning a HOME, mail me on hello@mohanmenon.in.
